Bauman Nutrition Consultant Internship | Print |
Bauman Nutrition, the clinical division of Bauman College, is pleased to announce a Nutrition Consultant Internship Program at the Bauman College Berkeley location. During the 13-week program, Intern teams, composed of two interns each, will provide personal nutrition counseling to clients from the Berkeley area. This 100-hour internship is available to graduates of the Bauman College Nutrition Consultant Training Program.

Here is what two participants had to say about the recent Penngrove Nutrition Consultant Internship Program:

"I am a different person than I was when I started. I have learned so much and have developed so much more confidence."

"I highly recommend this program to NCs. It provided me with 'hands-on' insight to a productive practice."

Program Description

For each client, Interns will provide the following:
  • An Initial Health Evaluation (Intake form, diet and lifestyle forms and supervised 60-minute on-site interview) to determine health status, and diet and lifestyle patterns.
  • A written Initial Personal Health Plan, 1-2 pages in length, will review the client's status and goals, with approximately 6-10 initial, specific, personalized recommendations for diet, lifestyle, supplements, and herbs.
  • One or more meal plans, recipes, and informational handouts.
  • Follow-up sessions by phone offering inspiration and encouragement to help clients achieve their goals and creatively resolve client challenges.
*Note: Clients will be required to have a phone, computer, email account, reliable Web connection, and CSA produce subscription or “pledge” equivalent!

The 13-week Internship schedule at the Berkeley location will be comprised of:

Weeks 1 and 2: Interns will receive training in client-based nutrition consultation with skill-sharpening exercises. Interns will also receive a Handbook with forms, articles, and a statement of the principles of consultation, scope of practice, and guidelines for the handling of case reports and other documents. Training will include orientation for understanding the components of the Intake session, Personal Health Plan, Handouts, Meal Plans, and follow-up sessions. Team members will pair off for exercises in consultation, listening, and feed-back, exchanging lead and secondary roles.

Weeks 3 through 12: Intern teams will carry out consultations for about 4 hours per week. After a client receives an initial supervised on-site session, sessions by phone will follow. Phone consults will allow for program efficiency, ease of scheduling, reduced impact on the Berkeley site, and will minimize the need for client and Intern transportation. Interns will also devote about 3 hours per week to creating client reports, health plans, and educational materials, as well as consultation reports. All documents will be carefully reviewed by the Supervisor for professionalism, appropriateness, and clarity. Additionally, Interns will participate in a weekly 1-hour case review conference call with the Supervisor or other key college staff.

Week 13: Final case summary and review take place (two 3-hour sessions at Bauman College Berkeley).  During the last session, there will also be an evaluation of the program by the Interns, with discussion and closing comments.

Intern Qualifications:
  • BC Certification as a Nutrition Consultant
  • Proof of Professional Liability Insurance policy or pending application
  • Proof of NANP Membership
  • A 300-word essay explaining the prospective Intern's life aspirations, professional focus, areas of expertise, and the type of clinical conditions and clients that are of interest or not of interest (these essay guidelines will appear on the application)
  • Participation in an interview with the program Supervisor, resulting in a positive evaluation
